RSCH live cardiac procedures beamed to major conference

Coronary artery disease affecting the left main artery is usually dealt with by coronary artery bypass surgery, but in some patients, successful outcomes can be achieved by using less invasive techniques with balloons and stents, writes Dr Adam de Belder.

The Sussex Cardiac Centre, based at the Royal Sussex County Hospital hosted the 3rd Left Main Stem Intervention meeting on June 6th to discuss the progress of this new technology.

Most of the leading UK exponents of interventional cardiology gathered for the day to hear a variety of lectures on the subject.

The highlight of the course was the live transmission of five procedures performed in the RSCH cardiac catheter laboratories to a conference centre on the seafront.

All five patients had narrowed arteries in their main coronary artery and consented to the operation.

This was performed by five invited experts from around UK and Europe, with the help of the local interventional cardiologist team of Adam de Belder, Stephen Holmberg and David Hildick-Smith.

It was a great privilege for the centre to have Dr Thierry Lefevre, from France, who is the leading exponent of interventional treatment for left main stem coronary artery disease – he performed one of the cases, and gave a plenary lecture on his clinical experience.
